Orthodontic Treatment
Nasoalveolar Molding (NAM) for Cleft Lip & Palate Patients
Nasoalveolar Molding (NAM) is a specialized pre-surgical technique used to shape the gums, lips, nostrils (nasal cartilages), pre-maxilla, and alveolar ridges into their proper form and position before cleft lip and palate surgery. This procedure helps improve surgical outcomes by ensuring better alignment and aesthetics. NAM is an essential step in the comprehensive treatment plan for cleft lip and palate patients.
Space Management and Space Maintainers
Primary (milk) teeth naturally exfoliate between the ages of 6 and 12, making way for permanent teeth to erupt. When a decayed primary tooth is left untreated and requires early removal (extraction), it can disrupt this natural process. Premature loss of primary teeth may result in crowding of permanent teeth or even failure of permanent teeth to erupt due to lack of space. Space maintainers are used to prevent this. They hold the space left by prematurely lost primary teeth, ensuring that permanent teeth can erupt properly, avoiding crowding or malocclusion. This proactive approach is essential for maintaining proper dental alignment and preventing complex orthodontic issues later.
Correction of Oral Habits (Thumb Sucking, Lip Biting, etc.) Children often develop abnormal oral habits such as thumb sucking, lip biting, nail biting, mouth breathing, or teeth grinding (bruxism). These habits can have adverse effects on the alignment of teeth, the surrounding muscles, and even jaw growth. The severity of the damage depends on the type, intensity, and duration of the habit. For instance, prolonged thumb sucking can lead to protruding front teeth or improper jaw development, while lip biting can damage the soft tissues around the mouth. To address these issues, a Habit Breaking Appliance is recommended. This appliance helps correct these habits, preventing further complications and supporting proper oral development.
Fixed Orthodontic Treatment (Braces)
Once all permanent teeth have erupted, any issues like crowding, malocclusion, or rotation of teeth can be corrected with Fixed Orthodontic Therapy, commonly known as braces. Braces work by applying gentle pressure to the teeth, gradually aligning them into their proper positions. The duration of treatment varies depending on the severity of the malocclusion but typically takes 1.5 to 2 years. Fixed orthodontic treatment ensures a well-aligned bite, improved aesthetics, and better oral health.
